eBay Marketplaces Visualization Kiosk
Real-Time Global Commerce Telemetry on an Interactive 65-Inch Touch Wall

Overview
The eBay Marketplaces Visualization Kiosk was built within eBay’s Human Interface Group (HIG) to demonstrate how large-scale, high-refresh-rate touch interfaces can empower employees, analysts, and partners to explore the massive volume of rapidly changing telemetry that drives eBay’s global marketplaces.
We used this system as a proving ground for experimental large-screen data visualization concepts—designing responsive multi-touch controls and high-density views capable of turning raw event streams into immediate spatial and temporal insight.
Technical Highlights
- Real-Time Event Streaming Pipeline: Connected a Node.js aggregation tier and MongoDB buffer to eBay’s internal real-time marketplace event streaming bus, pushing live transaction and search telemetry to the frontend over low-latency WebSockets.
- High-Frame-Rate Visual Encoding: Combined Angular state management with hardware-accelerated Canvas/SVG/CSS layers to animate concurrent transaction flows, category breakdowns, and time-series metrics smoothly on a 65-inch display.
- Ambient & Proximity Awareness: Paired an IR multi-touch frame with a Microsoft Kinect sensor to transition between ambient “attract-mode” data radiators seen across the room and deep interactive drill-down controls when a user stepped up to the screen.
